Ghana abolishes tolls on public roads and bridges

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has announced the abolishment of all tolls on public roads and bridges.

This would take effect after the approval of the Financial Policy of the government ending 31st December 2022.

Delivering the 2022 budget in parliament on Wednesday, Mr Ofori-Atta said the move would facilitate movement, increase productivity and reduce environmental pollution.

The 2022 budget is on the theme: “Building a sustainable entrepreneurial nation: fiscal consolidation and job creation.”

The Finance Minister said governments over the years imposed and maintained tolls on some public roads to raise funds for road construction and maintenance, just as in many countries.

“However, over the years, the tolling points have become unhealthy market centres, led to heavy traffic on our roads, lengthened travel time from one place to another, and impacted negatively on productivity,” he said.

On the state of roads in the country, he acknowledged that roads in the country needed to be fixed, promising that the government would fix the roads.

“It is true that more roads have been fixed and are being fixed over the last five years than any relative period in the entire history of our nation. We even want to do a lot more and this budget will cater for this,” he added.
