Non-partisan democracy said to be the best for Africa

The rancour and bitterness within political parties in the democratic development is retrogressive and inimical to their economic well-being, Mr Prince Bagnaba Mba, President of Forum for Equity, a human rights Non-governmental organization, has said.

He said situations, where the political turf was turned into a  war zone of words, acts of sabotage and conspiracy, Nationalist patriotism were a result of party loyalty and called for a departure from that system

“We have witnessed the intense heated battering and physical exchange of fisticuffs over non-issues over which party is really supreme.

There’s the urgent need to fashion out a non-partisan constitution. After all the constituent assemblies that promulgated the present legislatures in Africa were not composed on a `partisan basis.”

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on current entrenched positions of the political divide, especially on the passage of E-Levy, Mr Mba said Representatives should be determined by individual’s commitment and worthwhile contributions to the general development of the constituencies.

Mr Mba said examples of fractional political upheavals abound throughout the continent, where issues of national interest were only viewed through the partisan lens, making it dangerous for the development of the continent.

He said running a political party was expensive and counterproductive and, therefore, a non- partisan democracy would not only be all-embracing, but would ensure grassroots participation and the true meaning of belonging.

“From almost all the African countries, the opposition play the role of “pull them out “and the ruling party also ensures winner takes all. It has become a vicious cycle with no direction. We can do better rather than practising alien political culture we don’t care to understand.”
