Traditional Council to wage war on tree felling
The Daffiama Traditional Council in the Nadowli District of the Upper West Region, is exploring legal means to stop the indiscriminate felling of commercial trees like shea and dawadawa for fuel wood.
Pito brewers in particular who have heaps of wood from the shea tree for their business operations would be the immediate target.
Naa Dikunwine Domalae, Paramount Chief of the area gave the warning at a durbar of the chiefs and people of the area, to climax the annual Yiguore festival.
He observed that uncontrolled bush fires and the felling of trees for fuel wood are leading to lesser rain and short farming seasons and called for concerted efforts to minimise the environmental degradation.
Naa Domalae advised the people to honour their tax obligations to enable the district assembly to raise enough money to meet its revenue targets.
He said arrangements were far advanced to upgrade the Daffiama Health Centre to a hospital and called on his subjects to volunteer their services to make the project a possibility.
Touching on education, he called on the government to provide additional infrastructure for the Daffiama Senior High school, which runs on the shift system due to the large admission of students.
The school has a student population of 310.
