Essien may not play in crucial Ghana-Cote d’Ivoire opener

Ghana may not field midfielder Michael Essien in the country’s crucial African Nations Cup opener against one of the competition’s favourites Cote d’Ivoire.

The Black Stars play the Elephants Friday January 15, 2010 in the Angolan northern enclave of Cabinda.

A BBC news bulletin monitored by ghanabusinessnews.com quoted the Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac as saying he does not think Essien is fit enough to play in the crucial encounter.

The Black Stars of Ghana camp has been hit with injuries prior to the competition in Angola. The team is without its inspirational captain Stephen Appiah and deputy captain John Mensah, all ruled out by injuries.

Another key player, Sulley Muntari has been suspended for indiscipline.
