Ghana Export Promotion Council builds capacity of exporters

The Ghana Export Promotion Council (GEPC) on Tuesday began a training course to build the capacity of potential and existing exporters to enable them meet the challenges of international trade.

The four-day course, which is being facilitated by the Ghana Export School, a capacity building arm of the GEPC, is also to expose stakeholders within the export community to new trends on the international market.

Experienced trade and export development officers of GEPC are taking the participants, mostly from the banking, manufacturing and services sectors, through the course.

Mr. Alexander Dadzawa, Principal Export Development Officer and Head of Manufactured Products Department of GEPC, briefing the Ghana News Agency in Accra, said course aimed at increasing the contribution of non-traditional exports sector towards the country’s envisaged economic threshold of about five billion dollars by 2015.

He said even though the non-traditional exports sector had been contributing immensely to the country’s Gross Domestic Product, the GEPC believed that with the right knowledge, the sector could perform better.

“That is why we will be taking them through costing and pricing of products as well as labelling and packaging to make their products competitive on the international market,” he said.

Mr. Dadzawa mentioned product planning and adaptation, export business planning, legal contracts and negotiations as some of other topics to be treated to effectively enhance the knowledge of the exporters and potential exporters to stay on top of the demands of the international market.

He urged the participants to use the opportunity to network to enhance their businesses.
