Teachers told not to use mobile phones during teaching hours

Basic school teachers have been told to avoid the use of mobile phones during the instructional period because that practice is unprofessional.

Mr Johnny Owusu-Boadi, the Obuasi Municipal Director of Education, said the practice amounted to misuse of pupils’ instructional hours and must stop.

“I will issue circular letters to all schools, banning this practice, adding, “I am not going to tolerate teachers misusing pupils’ contact period.”

The Municipal Director, who was opening an orientation workshop for 70 newly trained teachers at Obuasi, condemned the situation where some of them instead of teaching the children did their private studies.

“As much as I would encourage you to upgrade your professional and academic qualification that should not be done at the expense of pupils’ instructional period,” he said.

Mr Owusu-Boadi reminded the new teachers of the high performance of the Municipality in Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and said it was a challenge to them to help maintain the achievement.

“It is a challenge to you as new and young teachers to maintain the first position and even improve upon the 2009 percentage score of 96 to over 98,” the Municipal Director stressed.

He advised them not to put monetary gains before the welfare of their pupils.

Mr M.S. Kusi, the Deputy Director in charge of Human Resource Management and Development, (HRMD) cautioned teachers against lateness and absenteeism.
