Government commended for making sale of premix fuel beneficial to fishing communities

The Chief of Apam, Nana Edu Effirim X, has commended the government for generating funds for landing beach communities through the sale of premix.

The chief made the commendation at a forum at Apam at which the Premix Committee rendered account of their stewardship from 26th August 2009 to the 15th of March 2010.

The committee realized GH¢8,500 as the community’s share from the sale of the fuel.

The National Premix Committee mandated the landing beach committees to pay a percentage of the profit made from the sale of the commodity into the accounts of the community for development projects which must be decided by the general public.

Nana Effirim said the decision of the National Premix Committee to give part of the profit to the communities was laudable and was in line with President John Evans Atta Mills’ Better Ghana Agenda.

He alleged that the committees under the previous New Patriotic Party government which sold the product for eight years without paying anything to the communities must be made to account for their stewardship.

Mr. Kobena Abrobidze, a fisherman, appealed to the national Committee to increase the number of premix outlets in the town’s sole outlet would not cater for the demand local fishermen especially, during the main fishing season.

Mr. Theophilus Aidoo-Mensah, District Chief Executive for Gomoa West, assured the fishermen that their request for additional outlets would be communicated to the authorities in-charge of the fuel.

He told the fishermen not to smuggle the fuel to other countries nor sell it to drivers and chainsaw operators.

The DCE cautioned the committees and the tanker drivers to desist from diverting the premix to petrol filling stations.

He urged the chief and his elders to discuss whatever plans they have on how to spend the money with the general public.
