Researchers say "Pure Water" is source of bacteria infection
Research conducted in Navrongo to ascertain the wholesomeness of sachet water has established that some brands on the market are not wholesome and can endanger life.
Some of the sachet water referred to Ghana Water Company Limited, the University for Development Studies and the Navrongo Health Research Centre laboratories showed bacteria presence in the water.
This came up when Mr. Ramon Romero Suarez, a Cuban researcher, presented a paper in Bolgatanga on quality water and the consumption of polluted water and related diseases at the 11th Regional Scientific Workshop between Ghanaian doctors and their Cuban counterparts in the Upper East Region.
He said consumption of such water exposed the people to water related diseases such as such cholera, typhoid and abdominal disorders among others and that there was a high possibility pure water operator did not filter their water before bagging it.
Mr Suare appealed to stakeholders including the Food and Drugs Board, the Ghana Standards Board, research institutions and the district assemblies in the area to find effective ways of ensuring that sachet water producers strictly adhered to proper water filtering practices to reduce water related diseases in the area.
He suggested to the stakeholders to spearhead a possible enacting of a law to check quality of ‘pure water’ in the country.
