Public asked to volunteer information on scrap dealers

The Tema Regional Police Command has appealed to the general public to volunteer information that would lead to the arrest and prosecution of unscrupulous scrap dealers within the metropolis.

A statement issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Regional Police Command and signed by Chief Inspector Olivia Turkson, Head of the Unit, warned residents in the metropolis who buy those scraps as well as drivers who carry the dealers to desist from the practice.

The statement said information reaching the Unit indicated that the scrap dealers had extended their activities to Communities One, Seven, Eight and Nine between the hours of 2 a.m. and 3 a.m.

These miscreants, the statement disclosed, target iron metals which cover manholes within the above mentioned vicinities for sale as scraps.

The statement intimated that at dawn of July 8, residents of Community One Site 21 woke up only to find that the iron metals which covered their main manhole had been stolen by the syndicate.

According to the Unit, information gathered by the Police indicated that some people heard a loud sound at dawn on that fateful day, but least suspected that the iron metal that covered their manhole had been removed by the syndicate leaving them with the stench.

The statement said the situation “makes it dangerous to the health of the residents who fear that if immediate steps are not taken their children may fall into the manhole.”
