Ghana’s Okine is new WPBF Champion
Ghana’s Joshua Okine on Saturday became the new World Professional Boxing Federation (WPBF) Welterweight Champion when he chalked a unanimous decision over Mohamed Abdullaev of Uzbekistan at the Ohene Djan Stadium, Accra.
In a promotion organised by Golden Mike Promotions which was dubbed the “Night of Champions”, Okine scored 120-109, 120-109 and 120-108 on the cards of all the three judges to win the day.
Okine also known as “Bukom Tsatsu” dominated all the rounds even though his contender showed signs of a good boxer but he found it difficult to lay a firm claim on any of the 12 rounds.
The Ghanaian was all over the Uzbek as he delivered punches from the ribs to the stomach and onto the face, but they seemed to lack what it takes to send the visitor down to the canvas.
He, however, remained in control of the fight and ensured that he ended with clean records on the score cards of all the three judges.
In another WPBF Super Lightweight fight, Albert Mensah also of Ghana annexed the title with another unanimous decision of 118-111, 190-110 and 119-110 over Karen Tevosiyan of Russia.
Ghana’s Emmanuel Tagoe also had an easy pay day over Samuel Kamau of Kenya in one minute, 13 seconds of round one to retain the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Africa Super Featherweight Title.
Another Ghanaian boxer, Ishmeal Tetteh was however disappointing when he failed in a bid to win the WBO Africa Middleweight title as he lost 112-118, 114-116, 112-117 to Peter Mashamaite of South Africa after 12 rounds.
In an eight round local Featherweight contest, Alfred Tetteh won by 115-112, 113-113, 116-111 over Ishmael Aryeetey, whilst Maxwell Awuku knocked out Dan Quartey in two minutes and three second of round four in another local derby over eight rounds of their Super Featherweight contest.
