3,760 youth in Upper West get employment

The National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) has so far recruited 3,760 young people in the Upper West Region into its six operational modules this year.

The break down is as follows; 600 were recruited under Health, 1,473 under Education, 110 for Community Protection Assistance, 1,800 under the Waste and Sanitation module as well as 150 for the Paid Internship module of the programme.

Mr. Saani Nurudeen, the Regional NYEP Coordinator, told the Ghana News Agency in Wa on Thursday, that a total of 2,099 people had also been exited from the programme after completing their two-year contract.

“Under the Trades and Vocational Module of the programme, we are currently training 600 youth in dressmaking with another 420 people also being trained in mobile phone/computer repairs and assembling”, he said.

Mr. Nurudeen said about 10,000 youth would be recruited countrywide and trained in hairdressing, hinting that 150 master trainers in hairdressing would be recruited for the region.

On the issue of the fate of those that exited from the programme, he revealed that the Ghana Health Service (GHS) was expected to enrol those who had been able to improve on their grades into the Health Training Institutions for them to pursue their education.

The others would be encouraged and given the opportunity to enrol into the Trades and Vocational module to learn some entrepreneurial skills to support themselves.

He said all outstanding allowances owed to the exited beneficiaries had been paid and indicated that those who are currently engaged under the programme would enjoy better services.

He advised the youth take advantage of the programme to gain some level of experience required on the job market to prepare them adequately for the future.
