Ghana imports four high yielding seed maize varieties
Four high yielding seed maize varieties imported from the US have been introduced into the country for distribution to maize farmers throughout the country.
This is under the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) programme to increase maize production for local consumption and for export.
The seed maize, known as “Pioneer maize”, is drought resistant and could yield 42 bags per acre.
Mr Samuel Asante Mensah, the Project Manager of the Adventist Development Relief Agency (ADRA/MiDA) agricultural project, said this when farmers from Osino, Nsuapemso, Saaman and Nsutam in the Fanteakwa District inspected a demonstration farm.
He said some local companies were prepared to buy the maize when produced for sale to poultry and livestock farmers while the World Food Programme (WFP) will also purchase any excess maize for distribution to drought and flood affected victims in other part of the world.
The farmers appeal for adequate supply of the seed maize and other inputs to cultivate the maize on large scale.
