Ghana to participate in the World Computer Programming Contest

Mrs. Dorothy Gordon, Director-General of Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence, on Wednesday called on the Ghana Education Service to introduce a subject in secondary schools that would assist students to solve their problems.

She also asked students to take the learning of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) seriously to enhance academic work.

Mrs Gordon was speaking at a press conference on Ghana’s participation in this year’s World Computer Programming Contest dubbed: “International Olympiad in Informatics”, scheduled for August 14 in Canada, in Accra on Wednesday.

She said the Center has initiated a programme to promote the learning of ICT among the youth to enable them to effectively contribute to development.

Mrs. Gordon expressed worry that Ghanaian youth could only use ICT equipment and phones and called for support for them to enable them to acquire skills in the production of ICT equipment.

Ghana’s participants, Master Elias Awudu of Prempeh College, Kumasi, Jonathan Mishiame of Apam Senior High School, and Cecil Arthur of Pope John’s Senior High School were taken through two months training at the Centre, to enable them to favourably take part in the contest, by Francis Dogbey and Ama Asare at the Centre.

Three hundred and twenty-three persons from 82 countries would take part in this year’s contest.
