McCain blasts Obama for delaying tax cuts

Sen. John McCain yesterday blasted President Obama for waiting too long to push a tax-cut package for the ailing economy, calling it a “deathbed conversion.”

“Look, they’re just flailing around,” McCain said. “We always like to see deathbed conversions, but the fact is, if we’d done this kind of thing nearly a couple years ago, we’d be in a lot better shape.

“The [president’s] economic policies have failed,” the 2008 Republican presidential nominee said of Obama’s $814 billion stimulus and other measures that haven’t revived the economy.

Obama plans to tout a second, less expensive stimulus package in a speech Wednesday in Cleveland.

It is expected to include small-business tax breaks and incentives for businesses to hire workers.

The $100 billion package will be the first in a series of new measures the White House hopes will boost the economy to keep the Democrats from getting pummeled at the polls in November.

“We are confident that we are moving in the right direction,” Obama said last week.

“But we want to keep this recovery moving stronger and accelerate the job growth that is needed so desperately all across the country.”

McCain said the president’s proposals were too little, too late.

He accused the White House and congressional Democrats of waging “class warfare” with plans to extend President George W. Bush’s tax cuts for the middle class while letting the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy expire.

“Well, let’s get in the old class warfare again. Let’s get the rich. Just extend the tax cuts,” McCain said mockingly.
