Newmont Akyem Project to employ 100 percent unskilled labour
Newmont Golden Ridge limited (Newmont Akyem Project) is determined to fulfil its commitment on the 100 percent unskilled labour engagement in its area of operation.
Mr Marfo Oduro-Kwarteng, Communications Manager of the Company, told journalists on Thursday that the measure was aimed at ensuring that the local people were gainfully employed.
He said vacancies for skilled labour would be advertised and qualified applicants would be engaged irrespective of where one comes from.
He said the construction of nurses’ quarters at new Abirem, Afosu School and Old Abirem School were underway.
Mr Oduro-Kwarteng said in addition to crop compensation payments, Newmont was fully funding livelihood replacement programmes.
He said to help the surrounding communities deal with the expected population influx, the company was constructing boreholes to improve water supply.
It is also embarking on health education in the communities while HIV/AIDS peer educators were being trained.
