Trader in court for fraud

Kwabena Boateng, a trader, on Monday, appeared before the Kade District Magistrate’s Court charged with defrauding by false pretences.

He pleaded guilty and was remanded in police custody to return on October five for sentencing.

Police Detective Corporal Isaac Owusu-Achiaw, prosecuting, told the court, presided over by Mr Abdul Majid Iliasu, that the accused, on June 9, went to the house of the complainant, who resides at Kade, and introduced himself as a retired policeman, now an accredited agent to supply food items to the Agona Swedru Senior High School (SHS)

The prosecutor said Boateng who had an ill motive to defraud took the complainant to a house near the Kade cemetery and said that was his own residence.

He said based on that false representation, Boateng succeeded in defrauding the complainant by collecting 11 bags of maize promising to pay her within two weeks but he failed to honour the promise after the period had elapsed.

As a result, the complainant went to the house which Boateng had claimed to have built but was told that the accused was neither the landlord nor a tenant.

All efforts made to locate Boateng proved futile and a report was made to the police so the accused, who was already in police custody, for a similar offence, was re-arrested.

During investigations, he admitted the offence and was processed for court.
