Sports ministry to employ 650 persons across the country
Minister of Youth and Sports, Ms Akua Sena Dansua, has said that the Ministry would employ 650 persons as permanent staff to beef up its activities in the various Districts and Municipalities across the country.
Ms Dansua said the National Sports Council has received approval from the Head of Civil Service for the employment of the staff but was awaiting financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning to embark on the exercise.
The Minister was answering a question in Parliament on Thursday when the Member for Techiman South, Mr Simons Addai requested an outline of the ministry’s plans to assist the Techiman Municipal Assembly to complete the construction of a sports stadium project which was halted some years ago.
Ms Dansua who is also the Member of Parliament for North Dayi said meanwhile the Sports Ministry has walled the facility to secure it from encroachers.
She explained that the National Sports Council has appointed a District Sports Development Officer, Mr Ebenezer Omari Denkyira who was attached to the Municipal Assembly to be responsible for sports development in the municipality.
The Minister stated, however, that the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) were now responsible for sports and youth development at the district level while the ministry is to focus on national sports policies and major international and national sporting concerns.
“I therefore advise the Techiman Municipal Assembly to take steps to complete the project,” she ordered.
