Ho Polytechnic to bar outrageous dressing from lecture halls
Dr Jakpasu Victor Afun, Rector of Ho Polytechnic on Thursday warned that outrageous dressing by students would not be tolerated in lecture halls.
He said his notion of improper dressing did not only refer to female students with dainty clothes, but also male students showing “un-kept pants with trousers sweeping the ground”.
Dr Afun was addressing the 18 Matriculation Ceremony of the Ho Polytechnic to formally admit 1,989 students to the Polytechnic this year.
He said such dresses, which were distractions would not be tolerated and that pranks associated with girlish and boyish behaviours during secondary school days were over.
Dr Afun said he would be particularly stringent on students’ attitude to examinations, which must reflect the continuous assessment module of the semester system.
He said students, who managed to enter the Polytechnic with forged documents, would be tracked and sacked.
Dr Afun said even where such students had finished their courses successfully, their certificates would be withdrawn.
The Rector said the Polytechnic was one percent short of attaining its 40 percent female admission, which stood at 39 percent this year.
He was unhappy with the lingering phobia of women for technical subjects, which perhaps accounted for “no females in Building Technology (B-Tech), Higher National Diploma (HND) in Agric, Engineering, Electrical, Electronics and Construction Technician courses.
Dr Afun observed that the institution “continues to be dominated by Accountancy, Business and Hospitality students, who constituted about 66 percent of this year’s matriculants”.
He said the Polytechnic had provided a specialized computer laboratory for the Department of Statistics and that another one would soon be set up for the Department of Accountancy under the Teaching and Learning Innovation Fund of the World Bank.
Dr Afun advised the students to avail themselves for opportunities to engage in sports, saying “as I can see some of you are overweight”.
He announced that the school had engaged the services of a medical doctor who would visit the school three times in a week to attend to the sick.
Dr Afun advised the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) to keep within the politics on campus.
The Ho Polytechnic has five major faculties; Applied Sciences and Technology, Arts and Design, Business and Management Studies, Engineering and the Servicing Departments.
