Students in Tamale sensitized on Ghana’s oil industry

Students of second-circle and tertiary schools in the Tamale Metropolises have been sensitised on revenue that would be accrued from the oil and gas industry, local content, and bills to regulate the sector, currently in Parliament.

They were from Tamale Polytechnic, Tamale Nursing Training College, Tamale Training College and Tolon Senior High Business Secondary.

This was at a forum organised by the Accountability and Good Governance Network (AGNET), the Ghana Development Community Associations (GDCA) and Dalun Simli Centre, all non-governmental organisations, to empower the students on the oil industry to enable them to hold public officers accountable.

Mr. Mohammed Mumuni, Secretary of AGNET, on Friday in Tamale said Ghana found oil in commercial quantities in 2007 and would soon drilled the first oil to increase the country’s revenue base.

He said currently revenue and local content and participatory bills both of which intended to involve more Ghanaians in oil drilling were before Parliament.

Mr. Mumuni said Ghana lacked capital, skilled labour and technology to drill the oil and needed to map up strategies for the local content participation.

He said that the oil industry involved the upstream, midstream and downstream and the country was currently engaging in the upstream.

Miss Mustapha Asiya, Member of the AGNET, said that the country would derive royalties and taxes from the oil industry.

She said the revenue would be used for any national development plan and the Ministry of Finance and Economic planning would decide on how much of the revenue should be used to support the budget.
