Mineworkers Union builds school complex at Obuasi

The national leadership of the Ghana Mineworkers Union (GMU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), on Thursday cut the sod for work to begin on the construction of a basic school complex at Obuasi.

The GH¢960,000-project to be financed solely by the Union is to be executed by Angel Construction Limited in Kumasi.

The school complex would comprise a pre-school, primary and Junior High School blocks, a library, an ICT centre, an administration block, a place of
convenience and a playing field.

At the ceremony, Mr William Prince Ankrah, the General Secretary of the GMU stated, “With this project, GMU is changing the trades union environment in the country”.

He said the Union placed premium on human capital investment and as such, “has been driven by this positive conviction to develop this project to offer quality basic education to the dependants and children of our members in this community.”

Mr Ankrah added that the Union was particularly attached to the project because the perception and behaviour of children were shaped by quality environment created by their teachers and parents.

“We believe that we could help shape the beliefs, values, attitudes and disposition of children of this community through modern education system like the one we intend to develop”, the General Secretary stressed.

Mr John Alexander Ackon, the Municipal Chief Executive praised the Union for becoming a responsible body, adding “let me commend management of Anglogold Ashanti (Obuasi) and the GMU for cooperating to develop the Obuasi Municipality”.

The Municipal Director of Education, Mr Johnny Owusu-Boadi, was full of commendation for the Union for initiating the school complex, which according to him, would help ease congestion in schools in the area.

He said provision of quality education is both a constitutional matter and a human rights obligation.

Mr Kwasi Enyan, the Managing Director of AngloGold Ashanti (Obuasi), lauded the vision of the executives of the GMU to supplement the efforts of the mine by building a school complex.

“This goes to buttress the point that the Union indeed is a partner in terms of seeking the welfare of our people”, Mr Enyan added.
