MTN sponsors 20 schools in Volta Region
MTN Ghana Foundation has sponsored 20 basic schools in the Volta Region to participate in the annual National Spelling Bee Competition.
The competition organised by Essence Communications, a non-governmental organisation is aimed at enhancing the reading skills, vocabulary and pronunciation among pupils as well as providing them with fun and entertainment.
MTN Foundation is supporting the competition which is open to pupils spanning eight and 14 years with GH¢14,000, which will cover the participation of the beneficiary pupils in the region.
The donation is also aimed at mobilising instructors to train the students, purchase teaching and learning materials for the competition and also acquire prizes for the winners at the regional level.
Speaking on behalf of MTN Ghana Foundation during the presentation of the sponsorship package in Ho, Nana Adjei Perbi, Education Portfolio Adviser for MTN Ghana Foundation reemphasised the organisation’s commitment to the development of education and its continuous support for projects and events aimed at improving teaching and learning.
Mrs Enyonam Christine Kugbeadzor, an official at the Ho Municipal Education office applauded MTN for its contribution to the development of education in the country.
She urged the pupils to pay attention to their instructors in order to put up their best performance to enable them represent Ghana at the world championship.
The annual Scripps National Spelling Bee competition was started in the US by Louisville Courier and was introduced in Ghana in March 2008 with only six participating schools and about 30 competitors.
More than 280 competitors drawn from 140 schools across the country are participating in this year’s competition.
This year’s event started off in September 2010 and will run till the end of February 2011.
MTN Foundation was established by the MTN Group Board as the vehicle for effectively administering MTN’s Corporate Social Responsibility contributions.
The MTN Foundation has so far launched two flagship projects since its establishment in November 2007.
These are the refurbishment of the second floor Maternity block of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and establishment of 10 MTN Information, Communication and Telecommunication Learning Centres in all the 10 regions.
