Mumford fishermen oppose ban on light fishing

Fishermen and fish-mongers at Mumford in the Gomoa West District of the Central Region, on Wednesday demonstrated against the ban on fishing with light.

The demonstrators petitioned the government to quash the ban, which they said had affected their livelihood.

Safohen Odoom, National Vice-Chairman of Inshore Fishermen Association, said due to climate change, the sea had become warm and for that reason the fish stock no longer emerge for the fishermen to trap them.

He said it was for this reason that they use light to entice the fish to harvest them.

Nana Kow Kotu, Chief Fisherman of Mumford said fishermen were running at a lost due to the exorbitant prices of diesel they use for their marine engines and appealed to the government to come to their aid.

Ms Hannah Akorley, a fish monger said since the ban was enforced two months ago a number of children had dropped out of school because their parents could not afford their education.

She appealed to the government to lift the ban to enable their husbands to discharge their responsibilities to their wives and children.
