Millicom Ghana, operators of the mobile service Tigo together with Alcatel-Lucent introduce mobile advertising in Ghana.
The service which has gone through a testing phase is now being opened up to all of Tigo’s subscribers.
The personalized mobile advertising service is the first in the country, according to a press release from Alcatel-Lucent issued Wednesday February 16, 2011 and copied to ghanabusinessnews.com.
The release says the two in a strategic partnership introduce the “first permission-and preference-based mobile advertising service in Ghana.”
The service is based on the Alcatel-Lucent Optism™ mobile marketing solution and enables Tigo’s customers to receive targeted promotions on their mobile phones.
“Subscribers can share information with Tigo about their preferences and receive interactive text messages containing important news, promotions, discounts and exclusive offers from their preferred brands,” it says.
According to the release, during the limited initial launch of the service, more than 40,000 subscribers opted into Tigo Ads and took advantage of the coupons and other offers from advertisers.
While mobile advertising is popular in other African countries including Nigeria, the service is not pervasive in Ghana.
Tigo is the second largest mobile phone service provider in Ghana with 3.9 million subscribers according to data from the National Communications Authority (NCA).
