CEPS official calls for tariffs review on rice importation

Mr. Albert Sowah, Principal Collector at Elubo, has appealed to the government to reconsider new tariffs imposed on imported rice as it was costing the country dearly.

He made the appeal to the Western Regional Minister, Mr. Paul Evans Aidoo, at a forum at Elubo on Wednesday.

Mr. Sowah said hitherto, Elubo was collecting GHC600 million as revenue for the state monthly on imported rice but this had reduced to GHC2000 since September last year when new the tariffs on rice were introduced.

He said with the new tariffs, no rice arrives at the Elubo and this was creating unemployment among the youth who were working at the border.

Mr Sowah said the nation could not continue to lose such huge revenue monthly.

Mr. Aidoo appealed to workers to continue to do their best in the face of the challenges as the situation was not peculiar to Elubo but also other entry points.
