Togolese music icon, Agboti Yao, on Sunday night thrilled music lovers in Ho in a special Independence Day “Music Party”.

Smartly dressed in white suit with red long-sleeve to match, Agboti Yao who was said to have been killed for composing a song against a political leader in Togo, held the about 1,000 fans spellbound with gospel tunes and love songs.

He interlaced his performance with words such as, “I’m alive to proclaim the goodness of God”, and intermittently asked the audience to give thanks to God.

Agboti Yao moved the crowd with his graceful steps front and back, twisting of his waist and the wavering of his right hand as if he was playing a guitar.

Broadcast journalist, Kwame Senyo of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation who moderated the event, got it tough controlling the crowd that sometimes surged around Agboti Yao as many people wanted to dance and take pictures with him.

Many people could not hold on to their seats when Agboti Yao performed songs such as, “Ablorde Gbadza, Ele Boto, Lorlor fe sefofo, Cherrie Je t’aime, Akpeda Ha and Tso wo dzi”.

The event recorded one of the highest patronages at social events in recent times in town which attracted fans from outside the country.

Agboti Yao in a brief chat with the Ghana News Agency said he was happy he had the chance to show to people that he was alive and commended Ghanaians for their support.

“I have been in exile for 18 years partly in Ghana and Germany but people in Ghana always have me mind. I love them and I pray for peace to prevail in this country,” he said.

Mr Joseph Amenowode, the Volta Regional Minister who was among the special invited guests, described Agboti Yao’s songs as comforting and healing.

He commended organizers of the event for giving people the opportunity to clear their doubts about Agboti Yao and cautioned against rumour mongering.
