Company chief says cocoa farmers should be trained

Dr Maxwell S. Amuzu, the Managing Director of the Cocoa Inputs Company Limited, has appealed to government to team up with non-governmental organizations to train cocoa farmers in financial management in order to sustain the cocoa industry.

He said a study conducted by the company showed that most of them did not know simple accounting system to enable them to know what to spend or not.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview on Wednesday, Dr Amuzu said after sales of their produce, they squander every thing without putting aside monies for maintenance.

This, he said, had put some in very awkward positions because they do not have money to buy chemicals for spraying and for insecticides thus exposing their farms to pests infection.

Dr Amuzu said notwithstanding the discovery of oil, the cocoa industry has a future and what was needed was to identify the problems and address them.
