Court jails 20-year old for stealing gun

The Ajumako District Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a 20-year old man, Kwesi Dadzie, to 15 months imprisonment in hard labour for stealing from the Produce Buying Company.

He pleaded guilty for unlawful entry, causing damage to a money deposit safe and stealing a Baikal Single Shot gun belonging to the Produce Buying Company (PBC) at Breman Toboase.

He is a native of Gomoa Ngyerase in the Central Region.

Narrating the case to the court, presided over by Mr Kwesi Boakye Ennimil, Police Chief Inspector Gershon Awuyee, said the complainant of the case is a purchasing clerk with the PBC at Breman Toboase.

He said on February 29 this year, at about 0100 hours, the witness in the case, who is the night watchman at the company’s office in Toboase, heard an unusual noise and rushed to the scene to find that the accused and two others were breaking a metal safe belonging to the company.

But when they saw him, they took to their heels.

He said the watchman, therefore, called the complainant on the phone and when he came to the office detected that his Baikal Single Shot Gun was stolen and the metal safe tampered with.

The prosecutor said the complainant reported the case to the Breman Asikuma Police, explaining that the accused, some months earlier, had broken into the same shed and stolen some dried cocoa beans for which he was arrested later.

The police said, on March 3, however, the accused was seen in town with the gun and was arrested and sent to the chief of the town where he confessed that it was one Isaac Ardan and Joe Amponsah, who stole the gun and gave it to him for safe keeping.

Dadzie was, consequently, handed over to the police.

The police said Ardan was also arrested later but in court, Dadzie said both Isaac Ardan and Joe Amponsah were not his accomplices, but he mentioned their names because of the pain he was going through when he was arrested and sent to the chief’s palace.

The court ordered the police to return the gun to PBC.
