DOVSSU Director asks Policewomen to sharpen their skills
The Co-ordinating Director of Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, has advised Policewomen to improve on their skills to achieve the overall goals of the Service.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Elisabeth Dassah gave the advice when he addressed policewomen at the weekly Inspector General of Police parade at the Police headquarters in Accra.
She explained that the non-discriminatory working environment in the service made it possible for policewomen to effectively manage the work-home interface while developing career plans consistent with goals of the service.
The DOVVSU Co-ordinating Director commended the Police administration for efforts to create gender balance in all spheres of policing, but asked that more policewomen should be encouraged to take up operational command positions.
She said the benefit of gender balance could not be over-emphasised in police operations.
ACP Dassah encouraged policewomen not only to set their eyes on external peacekeeping operations but the local ones as well.
She urged them to accept transfers to so call less endowed towns and villages, asking them not to remain in what she described as “comfort zones”.
She said: “Can we remain in this comfort zone and still be effective in operations? We need to fully integrate in the operational set.”
ACP Dassah asked policemen to encourage policewomen so that both sexes could make a good return in the maintenance of law and order.
“Democratic policing principles demands that the staff of police departments should represent the communities they serve and if we are to go by this alone, there should have been more women than men in the service as women outnumber men in Ghana,” she added.
