Danny Welbeck dumps Ghana, opts for England

Ghana’s dream of getting on-loan Sunderland striker Danny Welbeck to switch nationality from England and play for the Black Stars is over.

He has been called up by the Three Lions to feature in tonight’s friendly against Ghana. According to FIFA rules once a player with dual nationality features for one of the nations at the senior level, he won’t be able to switch to the other.

Danny Welbeck, known at birth as Daniel Nii T. M. was born on 26 November 1990 in Longsight, Manchester, England to Ghanaian parents.

A statement from the English FA says the striker joins the squad after the withdrawal of Tottenham Hotspur player Aaron Lenon.

“On-loan Sunderland forward Danny Welbeck has joined the England senior squad ahead of the friendly with Ghana at Wembley”, the FA said today March 29, 2011.

It added: “Welbeck, who scored for England Under-21s in their win over Denmark on Thursday, joins the senior squad for the first time following the withdrawal of Aaron Lennon.”

This article is wrong. Wellbeck will still be able to switch to Ghana even if he plays tonight because the match is a friendly. See Adam Barton and Nacer Chadli for examples:
