4 persons remanded for fraud

Four people who allegedly swindled a businessman of his GH¢124,000.00 under the pretext of supplying him with agro-chemicals have been placed in police custody.

They are Patrick Gyebi-Beatson, a technical officer of the Food and Agriculture Ministry, Kwame Agyepong, driver, Paul Kwaku Badu and Evan Buah, both traders.

They are facing charges of conspiracy and fraud. Their pleas were not taken and would be brought back on April 18.

Their three other accomplices are, however, on the run.

Police Chief Superintendent Moses Atibillah told the court presided over by Mr Justice William Boampong that the complainant, Kenneth Kofi Amoah is a businessman, who deals in fungicides and other agro-chemicals at Kejetia in Kumasi.

On March 10, the accused led by Gyebi-Beatson, approached him and offered to sell to him 300 cartons of “Rodemen” fungicides and other agro-chemicals.

He expressed interest and they settled on the cost of GH¢124,000.00, which Amoah paid.

The complainant arranged for a truck to transport the items but the accused convinced him that they would cart them to his shop in their own truck.

After waiting for hours with no sign of them delivering the products, he became uneasy and tried to reach Gyebi-Boatson on his cellular phone but without success.

The prosecution said some days later, he managed to track down the accused and caused their arrest.
