Brong Ahafo Police Command worried about media criticism

The Brong Ahafo Regional Police Command has appealed to the media to stop blaming the Police for their alleged inability to arrest two suspects, who allegedly stabbed two men at Abesim near Sunyani, with a knife.

One of the victims died and the other who was rushed to the hospital was in a critical condition.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Robert Ayalingo, Brong Ahafo Regional Police Commander, made the call a meeting with elders of Abesim and relatives of the deceased.

He expressed displeasure at the failure of residents of the town to provide the Police with adequate information towards the arrest of the culprits.

DCOP Ayalingo said “The police are not magicians to be able to identify and arrest the culprits and we rely on citizens of the town to assist with information that can lead to the arrest of the culprits”.

On April 25 this year, a group of young men went to a drinking spot popularly known as ‘Lovers Bar’ at Abesim at about 2300 hours to buy alcohol but the attendant refused to sell to them because it was too late.

This infuriated the young men and one of them slapped the attendant, and two Dagaabas known as Emma and Evans intervened to rescue the girl.

This resulted in a scuffle between the youth and Emma and Evans and one of the Dagaabas, now on the run, stabbed and killed instantly the deceased, Yaw Opoku, 25, and also stabbed Atta, 30, and he was rushed to the Regional Hospital in Sunyani.

DCOP Ayalingo asked journalists to always seek clarification to sensitive stories before publishing them.

He explained that Nana Kwaku Addai, landlord of the suspected culprits, was invited by the Police to help in investigation.

DCOP Ayalingo advised landlords to thoroughly investigate the background of prospective tenants before renting rooms to them.

He said the body of the deceased would be released to his family for burial after postmortem and appealed to the relatives to conduct the funeral peacefully.

DCOP Ayalingo gave the assurance that the Police would be present at the funeral to ensure peace.

Nana Owusu Adomako, Krontihene of Abesim, said that the elders of the town would assist the Police to apprehend the suspects.

He denied allegation that all Dagaabas had been chased out of Abesim, explaining that it was only a group from Burkina Faso that bolted after the incident for fear for their lives.
