Re-inspection, testing of vehicles begin on June 1

Alhaji Collins Dauda, Minster of Transportation, on Wednesday announced that all private and commercial vehicles would be re-inspected and tested for their road worthiness from June 1, this year.

He said the exercise to involve inspection of exhaust pipes and break systems would be undertaken by four private garages selected by the Driver Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).

These are Vito S Class Service Centre, Bivac Automated International, SPC Vehicle Servicing Centre and Bensam Vehicle Servicing.

Alhaji Dauda made the announcement during a tour of some private garages in Accra Metropolis to be approved by the Government to begin operation.

He said the exercise was to save life and protect the environment from pollution, however, fees would be charged for the garages and road maintenance.

The Sector Minister noted that road safety was critical in transportation and available statistics indicated that most crashes were caused by poorly maintained vehicles.

He explained that the DVLA was authorised to provide licence to private garages to undertake inspection and testing of vehicles based on laid down procedures and guidelines.

Alhaji Dauda said a certificate would be issued to vehicles that had gone through the exercise before the DVLA would authorise its road worthiness.

He urged Ghanaians, who purchased used vehicles, to go through the exercise to ensure their conditions.

Bivac Automated International, a vehicle inspection centre with 38 trained staff to volunteer for transport owners to check, test and inspect their vehicles, was one of garages visited.
