Accra Girls remembers departed students, staff

The Accra Girls Senior High School (SHS) on Sunday organized a memorial service in honour of some 135 past students and staff of the school, which had passed away since the school was established 51 years ago.

Speaking at the service, Mrs Miriam Nkansah, President, Accra Girls Old Students Association (AGOSA), noted that the event was also to give thanks to God for the lives of the departed ones and to remember them in a more positive way.

“This occasion would also enable us to remember our departed members in a more positive manner by recalling their good works and contributions that have made the School what it is today”, she said.

Mrs Nkansah expressed her appreciation to families of the departed ones, who had instituted memorial prizes and other initiatives in honour of their lost beloved relatives.

These include Susan Brodie-Mends Memorial Prize for the Best Home Economics student, Jennifer Meyer Memorial Prize for the Best Visual Arts student and Gloria Abbey Memorial Prize for the Best Biology Student.

The rest are the adoption of the Buckman House by the family of the late Mrs Paulina Buckman and the creation of a website for AGOSA in memory of the late Vesta Appiah Nyarko-Mensah”.

Preaching the sermon, Reverend Mrs Lily Oteng-Yeboah, a Presbyter of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Madina, called on humankind to consider death as a transition and that “at the end of our lives on earth we would give account of all our deeds. “Our lives on earth are like an appointment with our maker and He can terminate it at any time”.

She called on Christians to be righteous and to acknowledge God as the source of all things.

Mrs Veronica Akapame, Headmistress of the School, praised the AGOSA for the initiative and called on its members to continue to work for the wellbeing of the students.

There was a role call for all the departed students and staff of the school and an observation of a minute silence in their honour.

The Old Girls used the occasion to donate a GH¢6, 000.00 resograph (photocopy machine), which can print 90 copies in one minute.
