Dr Spio-Garbrah bows out from NDC race

Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, Former Vice Chairman of National Democratic Congress (NDC) has withdrawn from the Party’s presidential contest after failing to submit his nomination forms before the deadline on Wednesday, June 1.

Mr Naziru Mohammed, Co-ordinator of Dr Spio-Garbrah’s Campaign told Mr Johnson Asiedu-Nketiah, General Secretary of NDC that the presidential aspirant could not meet the requirements for submission of the nomination forms.

Speaking at the Headquarters of the Party in Accra on Wednesday, Mr Mohammed said Dr Spio-Garbrah complained about problems in securing delegates to endorse his nomination forms.

He appealed to the National Executive of the NDC to review the procedure in endorsing aspirants for leadership positions in the Party.

Mr Asiedu-Nketiah who accepted Dr Spio-Garbrah’s decision officially declared the nominations closed.

However, he urged Dr Spio-Garbrah to play his democratic role and be a good member of the Party by protecting its image.

Mr Asiedu-Nketiah said President John Evans Atta Mills and Former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings satisfied the requirements to contest for the Party’s flagbearership during its National Congress in Sunyani from July 8- July 10.

He announced that the National Executives of the Party would tour the country to cross-check and verify the authenticity of those who signed the nomination forms.

The General Secretary said after the verification, the aspirants would be invited for vetting from June 7- June 8 and stressed the need for clean campaign, saying “The contest is within the same family”.

Dr Spio-Garbrah, Chief Executive Officer of Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation resigned from his position in the party to contest for the Flagbearership.
