Ghanaian woman killed in factory accident in US

Monica Monnie would take three buses to her job on the West Side, where she worked for 18 years at a factory.

On Monday, Monnie, 61, died when the pink scarf she wore got caught in a machine at the Gaw O’Hara Envelope Factory, causing multiple injuries, an autopsy concluded Tuesday.

Monnie, an Edgewater resident, had a daughter and other family in Ghana, a sister in New Jersey and a brother in Connecticut.

She’d send money home to family and friends in Ghana, said Joyce Mulford, who went to church with Monnie and recalled how she would feed the poor Sundays at church and sang in the choir.

“She was always doing kind deeds,” Mulford said.

Representatives from the company, in the 500 block of North Sacramento, could not be reached Tuesday.
