Top UK Minister to visit Ghana, oil and gas high on agenda
Stephen O’Brien MP, UK’s Africa Development Minister, is set to pay an official visit to Ghana from July, 21-23 2011, the British High Commission in Accra has announced.
High on the agenda during O’Brien’s visit will be the newly found driver of Ghana’s economy, oil and gas.
According to officials, the Minister will meet the Vice President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, to discuss the economy, oil and gas, and development in the north, and the UK government’s existing and future support in these areas.
“He will receive a briefing on the Jubilee Oil Field, a world-class field that has rapidly moved from discovery to production and look at how big companies are working with small retailers to serve consumers in the farthest geographical and economic reaches of the market,” the High Commission said in a press release July 19, 2011.
British oil and gas producer, Tullow Oil Plc, has the largest share in Ghana’s Jubilee Oilfields which started producing oil on December 15, 2010.
Other matters that will be on the discussion table with the government of Ghana are the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) which is being supported by the UK, safe pregnancy and childbirth.
Mr. O’Brien will also meet the Minister of Trade, Ms. Hannah Tetteh, to discuss the government’s private sector development plans and the benefits of increasing regional trade, said the release.
O’ Brien is well remembered for spending a night in November 2010 at Gupanerigu in the Tolon/Kumbungu District which has no water and electricity.

interesting all of sudden Ghana is now on rader because of oil, what about when Ghana didn’t have nothing or countries who do not have anything. We need to look further or beyong this point.
Agriculture, Education and saving for future generation is what Ghana need.
This people are thiefs and they want to steal our oil,we have to becareful to this europian ministers, they dont care for us.
i support what john wrote, they only want to ruin us again by pretending they care so much about us and in the end, they are the same people who will laugh at us
The reality is that we need the European and American governments to buy our oil. At least they will give back something to Ghana. What is the alternative ? Give it to the Chinese who really will steal our resources and give us nothing in return ?
