Floods destroy farms and displace hundreds at Vume-Kpoviadzi

Floods have destroyed many hectares of vegetable and cereal farms in the Vume-Kpoviadzi Electoral Area in the North Norgu District at the weekend.

A total of 11 acres of maize and vegetables belonging to Togbega Yao Akornor II, Paramount Chief of the area, were among the affected.

Apostle Senyo Mawufemor Cudjoe, Presiding Member of the North Tongu District Assembly and Assemblyman for the Electoral, area who briefed the GNA at Ho, on Monday said a bridge connecting villages in the area was submerged disrupting school and commercial activities.

“Wuta, Kpogede, Klokope and Kpewu are all cut off from Kpoviadzi so our children cannot go to school,” he said.

Apostle Cudjoe said houses and other structures, including school blocks were either flooded or broken down.

He said the situation was making the lives more difficult to go about their normal duties and appealed for support from the National Disaster Management Organization, (NADMO) individuals and corporate institutions.

When contacted, Mr Henry Ametepe, Volta Regional Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization, (NADMO) said he had sent a team to the area to assess the situation because the information reaching him was scanty.

He said after the assessment, the Organization would collaborate with the District Assembly to offer some relief to victims of the flood.
