President Mills visits flood-hit areas

President John Evans Atta Mills on Monday visited flood-hit areas at Akim Oda in the Eastern Region where he sympathised with the people and promised that the Government would assist them.

Five people have drowned and extensive damage has been caused to farms, crops, roads, houses and personal property in five districts following floods after heavy rains last week.

President Mills, who was accompanied by ministers of state, said he was taken aback when he heard the news of the floods and asked that the issue should not be politicised.

President Mills, reacting to a statement by the Eastern Regional Minister, Dr. Kwasi Apea-Kubi, that illegal mining had been identified as the major cause of floods, said the only way this could be averted was to enforce the law.
