Government workers need alternative means of transport – Drivers

Some Trotro drivers have called on government to offer an alternative means of transport for its workers instead of relying on private cars which are causing congestion on our roads.

These drivers who are regular users of the roads said government should take the responsibility of transport for their workers in order to reduce the traffic which they said contributes to the loss of valuable time.

In an interview with some Trotro drivers who ply the Kaneshie-Kasoa road, they complained that the standard Trotro fares are very unreliable and as a result of that they make their earnings through the “short short” method where they run short distances instead of the stipulated distances to make earnings.

A Trotro driver John Atta Joseph said in a journey of 15 minutes from Barrier Junction to Kaneishie they end up staying in the traffic for over 45 minutes and this is worse during the rush hour.

He said due to the traffic, lowly paid government workers who own private cars would have to find alternative jobs to earn something extra to pay up their fuel bills.

He said private cars no longer serve as a quick means of transport for government workers due to the traffic they cause on the road and hence the government would have to find alternative means of transport for its workers.

When asked whether that would not destroy the patronage of the Trotros as the alternative means of transport would take away its customers, he said, the problem of traffic congestion wastes a lot of fuel and that if the government could offer their workers alternative means of transport, the population of private cars will reduce on the roads and hence less traffic for the Trotro drivers.
