Atiwa Assembly executes more than 70 projects

The Atiwa District Assembly has executed more than 70 projects since 2009, Mr Emmanuel Atta- Twum, the District Chief Executive (DCE) has said.

Addressing the first ordinary meeting of the Assembly at Kwabeng on Thursday, he said the projects were aimed at improving the lot of the people.

Mr Atta- Twum said they ranged from provision of health centres, road construction, classroom blocks, potable water, to other social interventions.

On Road Construction, the DCE said some projects which were awarded in 2010 had been completed. These include spot improvement of some feeder roads such as the 2.3 kilometre Bobome-Subriso, 3.6 kilometre Subriso-Tiawia, and 3.5 kilometre Yesom-Abrenya roads.

On Education, Mr Atta- Twum said the assembly had constructed a four-unit classroom block, office and store at the Accra Village for the Local Authority Primary School and a six- unit classroom block at Subriso-Abekwaase District Assembly Primary School.

Others are the six- unit block for Tumfa Methodist Primary School and six-unit classroom block for Wakpeti-Abrasu District Assembly School.

Mr Atta-Twum also mentioned the six unit classroom block for Nanapa District Assembly School, six- unit classroom block for Osoroase Krobom School and the six-unit classroom block for Tiawia-Subriso District Assembly Primary School.

He said the assembly supplied 400 dual desks for all the basic schools in the district.

He, however, expressed worry about the poor performances of pupils in the area, saying the best performance so far in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) was 54.3 per cent in 2010.

He, therefore, appealed to parents and all stakeholders to join hands to find a lasting solution to the problem.

Mr Atta-Twum assured that the assembly would soon launch an education endowment fund to cater for the educational needs in the district as a way of finding solutions to the numerous problems confronting the sector.

On Revenue, he said out of the estimated annual target of GH¢287, 267.00 to be collected from its local sources, at the end of June the assembly had collected GH¢153,528.12, representing 53.1 per cent.

The DCE appealed to the assembly members to be interested in the collection of tolls in their areas for the assembly to generate enough revenue to undertake its developmental projects.

He announced that the Atiwa District was the only one from the Eastern Region among the 40 selected districts nationwide to benefit from the Social Opportunity Project.

It is a major intervention by the Government to reduce rural poverty, provide rural household with access to employment and income earning opportunities.

Mr Atta -Twum also announced that the recent rainstorm disaster that hit the area resulted in the death of five people and damage to personal property estimated at GH¢100, 000.

He said the preliminary report by the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) indicated that about 51 houses had collapsed with more than 20,000 people displaced.
