Crime wave in Tema goes down
The crime wave within the Tema Region went down from 4,546 cases in the first quarter of this year to 4,233 during the second quarter.
Chief Inspector Olivia Turkson, Tema Regional Police Public Relations Officer, who released the figures to the Ghana News Agency, said assault cases topped the list and decreased from 1,828 in the first quarter, to 1,688 during the second quarter.
Chief Inspector Turkson said stealing which was second on the crime list, also decreased from 1,161 cases in the first quarter to 1,090 in the second quarter.
She said fraud cases placed third, going down from 321 in the first quarter to 299 in the second.
She said even though the Police managed to foil robbery incidents which might have resulted in fatalities, robbery cases shot up from 24 during the first quarter of this year to 32 cases in the second quarter.
Chief Inspector Turkson said the issue of false or dud cheques increased from 23 in the first quarter to 74 cases during the second quarter.
She said the total number of the recorded cases sent to court stood at 331 during the first quarter with the number dropping to 302 in the second quarter.
Chief Inspector Turkson said while as many as 217 of the cases for the second quarter were still pending before the law courts, 213 of them were still being prosecuted at the courts.
She said while a total of 3,915 of the 4,546 cases for the first quarter were still under investigations, as many as 3,622 of them in the second quarter were also being investigated by the Police.
Chief Inspector Turkson praised plain clothed police personnel whose frequent searches and swoops at the hide-outs of criminals helped to reduce violent crimes.
