USAID commended for supporting education in Ghana

Mr. James Appiah-Kusi, Nkoranza North District Director of Education, has commended the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and other donor agencies for improving education in the country.

Mr. Appiah-Kusi was addressing members of the District’s Education Oversight Committee (DEOC) during a two-day capacity building workshop at Busunya at the weekend.

It was organised by the Partnership for Accountable Governance in Education (PAGE) to identify practical ways that DEOC members could collaborate effectively with the District Education Office and other stakeholders to address school management issues.

Mr. Appiah-Kusi acknowledged USAID supported education projects such as Education Quality for All (EQUALL), Government Accountability Improves Trust (GAIT 1 and 11) Quality Improvement in Primary School (QUIPS) and Grants and Reporting Accountability to Improve Literacy (GRAIL) and said the donor agency had been very supportive in the education sector.

He said the DEOC concept established under the Ghana Education Service (GES) Act of 1995 had a legal backing and that committee members were responsible for an improvement in education in the district.

The District Director stressed the need for the Committee to ensure the welfare of teachers and students by establishing a cordial working relationship between the school authorities and the community in the training and education of the youth.

Mr. Appiah-Kusi urged the District Assembly to support activities of the DEOC so it could function effectively to enhance education in the communities.

Mr. Kwadwo Agyei-Dwomor, Nkoranza North District Chief Executive said the DEOC members should use their rich experience to intensify efforts to reverse the fallen standard of education in the district.

He stated that since education was the bedrock of every country’s development, his administration would not relent in effort in supporting educational programmes for the accelerated development of the area.

The DCE advised the youth to take their education seriously and pursue to higher levels to enable them to acquire better skills and knowledge to contribute towards the development of the district in particular and the nation in general.

Mr. Ohemeng Frimpong, Brong-Ahafo Regional Education Science Coordinator and a resource person, said the PAGE Project as initiated by USAID was under the management of CARE International, an NGO.

He said the project offered to improve the quality of teaching and learning while ensuring improvement in the management of education service delivery.

The Regional Coordinator said PAGE was currently working in 46 districts across the country, including Brong-Ahafo and urged the DEOC members of beneficiary districts in the region to work to ensure the success of the project.
