Nkoranza District records eight accident deaths between January-August 2011
Eight persons lost their lives in lorry accidents involving 17 vehicles in the Nkoranza district between January and mid-August this year.
Five of the deceased were men and three women.
DSP Joseph Owusu, Nkoranza District Police commander told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Nkoranza that, 22 other accident victims sustained various degrees of injury.
He expressed grave concern about the carnage on the roads in the district and advised drivers to be extra careful and vigilant.
The District Commander urged drivers to ensure the regular maintenance of their vehicles and to avoid over-loading, speeding and unnecessary over-taking, as these practices accounted for most motor accidents.
DSP Owusu reminded drivers that it was an offence to drive under the influence of alcohol or any hard drug and called on transport owners to always ensure their vehicles were covered with relevant documents.
He deplored the practice by some motor riders to who pick up two or three passengers without protective helmets and warned them to desist from the practice as it was against the law.
DSP Owusu warned drivers who drive without a licence since his outfit would not tolerate offenders.
