International Olympic Committee lifts Ghana suspension
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has lifted the suspension it placed on Ghana in January 2011.
“The IOC Executive Board (EB) also agreed to lift, with immediate effect, the suspension of the National Organising Committee (NOC) of Ghana, which was imposed in January to protect the interest of sport within the country after it was deemed the government had intervened in the running of the NOC,” the IOC said in a brief statement on its website today August 26, 2011.
The IOC took the decision during a meeting in the city of Daegu, South Korea which will hold this year’s World Athletics Championships August 27 to September 4, 2011.
“The Ghanaian Parliament recently adopted new sports legislation which is compatible with the Olympic Charter. The next step for the NOC will be to convene its elective General Assembly as soon as possible,” it adds.
