Run-away convict goes back to prison for 25 years
A 23-year old convict who broke jail early this year, has been sentenced to 25 years imprisonment in hard labour by circuit court in Cape Coast, after he was re-arrested for robbery and possessing of narcotic drugs.
Danjuma Iddrisu Mahamud had in February last year been sentenced to 36 months in hard labour by an Assin Fosu District Court for unlawful entry and stealing but escaped from the Ankaful prisons where he was incarcerated.
Mahamud was arrested again on June 3 this year, when some students identified him as the one who robbed them of their mobile phones on their way from school at Assin Fosu and caused his arrest only for the police to find wrappers of Indian hemp in his pockets.
He pleaded guilty to three counts of robbery and possession of narcotics and was convicted on his own plea by the court presided over by Mrs. Florence Kai Otu who sentenced him to 20 years on two counts of robbery and five years to the third count of narcotic possession.
DSP Samuel Kwarteng-Addae told the court that on April 28 2011 at about 0230 hours, Ms. Barbara Anaman and Ms. Afua Gyapomah, both final year students of Obiri Yeboah Senior High School in Assin Fosu were returning home from evening classes when they were attacked at gun point by Mahamud some 150 meters from their house.
DSP Kwarteng-Addae said the convict robbed them of their two mobile phones valued at GH¢140.00 and when they shouted for help, he fired a warning shot and escaped before some residents could come to their aid.
He said the two students on June 3, 2011, spotted him at Assin Fosu and made a report to the police who arrested him and a search on him revealed four wrappers of “Indian hemp” while a registered shot gun was also found in his room.
