Buwa Traditional Council expresses concern over development challenges
The Buwa Traditional Council in the Sissala West District of the Upper West Region, has expressed concern over the numerous developmental challenges affecting the people of the area.
The Council cited poor roads, lack of access to adequate portable water and good health facilities, lack of mechanized irrigation dams for dry season farming, inadequate number of teachers as well as lack of electricity.
The Council noted that these problems resulted poverty among the people, affected students’ academic performance and caused migration of the youth to the Southern part of the country for non-existent jobs.
Kuoro Barecheh Nlowie Baninye II, Divisional Chief of Niator and Acting President of the Buwa Traditional Council, made these known during the Council’s general meeting at Zini.
The meeting was attended by Chiefs, Assembly Members and Unit Committee Members, youth leaders from the area and the District Chief Executive, Mr. Robert Bakah Wavei.
Kuoro Baninye appealed to the Assembly to drill more boreholes in the area and upgrade the Zini health post into a clinic to enable the people have access to health care.
The Chief proposed the establishment of a Police Station at Zini to curb armed robbery and appealed to the Assembly to provide office accommodation for the Council.
He also asked the District Education Office to post more teachers to the area to help improve educational standards in the area.
Kuoro Baninye appealed to government to upgrade the Han-Zini-Gwollu road and construct new roads to link Zini and Jeffisi, Zini and Niator, Gbal and Sangbaka, Gumo and Du-West as well as Tiwii and Puzene to enhance development.
He asked government to establish a Secondary Technical School in the area to train the youth in vocational skills, to reduce their over dependency on white colour jobs and to prevent them from migrating to the South to engage in menial jobs.
Mr Wavei said 70 boreholes would be drilled in the district out of which the Buwa Traditional Area would benefit from more than 20 boreholes.
He said that plans were far advanced for the construction of the Gumo-Du West road, Niator-Wasai road, Tiiwi-Puzene road and Gbal-Sangbaka road all within the Buwa Traditional Area.
Mr Wavei said since this government took office a number of development projects had been executed including classroom blocks and public places of convenience.
He said that government alone could not adequately fund education in the country and appealed to the Buwa Paramountcy to establish an education endowment fund to support the education of brilliant but needy children.
