Ex-Central Bank Governor of Lesotho elected President of UN’s Trade and Development Board
A former governor of Lesotho’s central bank, Ambassador Anthony Mothae Maruping has been elected President of the Trade and Development Board (TDA), the governing body of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
He was elected by acclamation at the ongoing 58th session of the TDA taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, according to a statement from UNCTAD.
Ambassador Maruping who is also the Permanent Representative of Lesotho to the United Nations and the World Trade Organization, served as the Governor of the Central Bank of Lesotho from 1988 to 1998.
He replaces outgoing President Luis Manuel A. Piantini Munnigh, of the Dominican Republic.
The statement said Ambassador Maruping has been the Chair of Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF) Board from 2007 to the present, Chair of the WTO Committee on Trade and Development for 2011-2012, and Vice President of the UNCTAD Trade and Development Board for 2010-2011.
He has also served as President of the Group of 77 and China in 2011.
