Twenty-one people die in road crash

Twenty people died on the spot and one other later at the Juaso Government Hospital following a head-on collision between two buses at the outskirts of Yawkwei in the Asante-Akim South District of Ashanti Region at dawn on Thursday.

They comprise eleven women and ten men.

Vehicles involved in the crash were an O.A. Travel and Tours bus travelling from Accra to Kumasi and a bus from Techiman in the Brong Ahafo Region also on its way to Accra.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Augustine Mensah, Konongo Divisional Commander of MTTU told the Ghana News Agency that the bus heading towards Accra veered off its lane and ran into the O.A. bus, resulting in the crash.

He said the driver of the bus from Techiman died on the spot, while the O.A. bus driver is in a critical condition.

Injured persons were rushed to Juaso Government Hospital, Konongo Government Hospital and Agogo Presbyterian Hospital, while those in critical condition to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.

ASP Mensah said the police got wind of the crash and had to mobilise personnel form the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) at Konongo, Ejisu and Nkawkaw to assist in retrieving the dead, as well as the injured, from the wreckage.

He said all the dead bodies had been deposited at a private mortuary at Yawkwei.
