80 Central Region schools score zero per cent in BECE

Eighty schools out of 1,359 schools in 16 of the 17 districts of the Central Region scored zero per cent in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE).

The Upper Denkyira West District was the area that did not record zero per cent score, and results of seven schools in the Twifo-Hemang-Lower-Denkyira District had been withheld by the West African Examinations Council and the results of a student from the Gomoa West District was omitted without any reason.

Miss. Bridgette Lemaire, the Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service, disclosed these in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Cape Coast on Tuesday.

She said the 16 districts that had the poor results were Mfantsiman District, 11 schools, Gomoa West District, 10, Twifo-Hemang-Lower-Denkyira District, eight schools, Agona East, seven schools and Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese, seven schools.

The others were Assin North, six schools, Awutu Senya, Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa, Gomoa East and Agona West Districts, five schools each, Cape Coast and Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem three schools each, and Upper Denkyira East, Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam, tEffutu and Assin South, two schools each.

Miss Lemaire, however, said 338 schools scored 100 per cent in the examination:  Agona West, 74 schools, Assin South, 67 schools, Awutu Senya, 51 schools and Cape Coast Metropolis, 10 schools.

She said that of 38,334 candidates, 38,079 sat for the examination and 225 were absent due to pregnancy, sickness, death and truancy.
