Police intercepts gun, ammunitions in Northern Region

The Police in the Northern Region have seized an AK47 rifle and six magazines loaded with 366 rounds of ammunitions from two Fulani men suspected to be armed robbers.

Two men who were carrying the weapon on a motorbike managed to escape without arrest.

Chief Inspector Ebenezer Tetteh, Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, said a Police Constable Kwame Sakyere was on guard duty at the NDC Chairman’s house at Gushegu on Friday when he spotted the men on a motorbike around 12:30am.

He said the Constable suspecting that the men were curfew breakers, as the Gushegu area is still under curfew, signalled them to stop but they refused.

Inspector Tetteh said the Constable then placed his bicycle in the path of the riders and thereby obstructing them to fall into a ditch.

He said one of the men sensing danger quickly bolted and a struggle ensued between the Constable and the other rider, with the Constable holding the muscle of the rifle while the rider fired several shots into the air, but the policeman will not release his hold on the gun.

Inspector Tetteh said the policeman then shouted for help and sensing danger, the rider took to his heels.

He said as a result of the scuffle, the Constable was injured and was subsequently sent to the Gushegu hospital where he was treated and discharged.

Inspector Tetteh said search is currently underway for the riders and the ammunitions would be sent to the police laboratory for examination.
